Harbour Island began in the early
80's when Beneficial Drive developed Harbour Island, Incorporated to oversee
operations for the creation of a multi-use community that included businesses, retail and
residential opportunities on a 177 acre island off of downtown Tampa. When
Beneficial purchased the island, they changed the name from Seddon Island to Harbour
Island.
Just over 20 years ago, a forward thinking real estate executive
envisioned an upscale residential community where others saw an abandoned industrial
island and a downtown waterfront area dotted with dilapidated warehouses. And so the
vision began. In 1983, ground was broken and the timeworn Seddon Island made way for
Harbour Island, and a promise of luxury homes, shops and offices in the heart of downtown
Tampa.
